Hey There.... Alex Here From Sabah....
I am actually in a bit of a Problem now....
I was wondering....
What is the differences between a M40 and a M40is...?
Another Question is..
For those who drives their e30 everyday to work or for other reasons.....
Would you rather maintain the a m20 original engine or change it to Twin Cam m40 / m50....?

This depends on individual lah alex, if your car came with m20 and its still in good condition why not use it first. if you complaining about fuel consumption then change to m40 and if you want to maintain 4 cylinder like m40 but speed as good as (or more) than m20 then go for m42, if your cornering to light you want more heavier engine than go m50 single vanos (by this time your aint complaining about fuel consumption oledi lah). and tak puas hatio mau kasi laju lagi bikin V8 but dont forget to upgrade your brakes too (by this stage converting plus halfcut and parts can buy another e30)

I was in a huge puzzle and thanks to all of you guys... I have set my eyes on a m42is.... My m20b20 is drinking fuel like coke and i used to drive it once in a while... sure i did said that i sold it... but actually last minute... i brought it back home after finding out that i have a bunch of cash stash into a saving acc. so now... i plan to remove the m20b20 with the 3 broken piston ring at the moment, out from the body... get the rust done... change the color.... and Sumbat the Rebuilt M42is... and upgrade the chassis strength.... my last thing to do on this is the wheels and suspension & springs... due to what i want is not so easy to get.... i mean for the wheels la... plus i know it will cost me a BOMB!!!.... So yeah.... Tho... i was thinking to increase the bore into a 2.0L....
By the way, Bro. Kura2....
I'm serious about asking for some tips man...
I really could use some help and advice....
Thanks again you guys!!!!!

M42 is from E36 318IS, "I.S" is Injection Sports so what you wanted now is downgrading (downgrade in terms of engine capacity) from 2.0 to 1.8is NOT M42IS
Good luck, i oso wanted to do the same, since IS engine is a "poor man" M3 S14, also known as Baby M3

alex, just think about it...
M42 halfcut with EWS and KEY (without key i can say the halfcut is worthless)
sudah berapa nih? RM4.5K these was 4 years back, now i dunno.
Conversion? Wiring? Gearbox Manual? LongShaft? Axle?
if you managed to get everything cost might be up to 10k ahhh kasi masuk megasquirt like mistah kura2 no offense, in sabah is there a person who can do this kinda job? parts thats missing where to get? shipping cost? tax (for outside malaysia).
Now, your M20, running wild, 6 potter no problem. Sikit mod, mebbe port & polish, tukar cam...mebbe around 4k, tak mau cam, kasi p&p 2k. Jalan laju macam setan. Fuel comsumption, how far you travel each day? 40km?
if divide the money that you spent on M42 conversion (which might took months to get it perfected) compare with m20 fuel consumption .... you do the math

You're welcome bro. AFAIK I've only read about one other person who did the IS conversion in Sabah..lookup JONNIEZ in bmwcm.
Should you go the m42 way, either source for a non-ews ecu and engine or look for one with the complete EWS set otherwise you'll run into many issues and headache like me. And make sure u get the engine tested prior to anything else.Other than that..everything can be done up by a competent mech. should you source the engine plus shipping from kl will set u back altogether at ~5k+(engine+all ancillaries+gearbox and maybe with the longshaft and axle if you're able to source it altogether).
IMO the m20 should go well with the roads in Sabah BUT the m42 isn't falling too far behind for the thrill either hehe. The final decision is yours bro..good luck!

bro...there must be a compromise...
what is power without balance?
e30 is roughly 1200kg....m20 b25 is just perfect for it...why mess with it? power to weight is awesome, only thing it is an old engine....but so is the e30 right? so no complains...perfect 50/50 power to weight ratio.
IS no doubt with its double butterfly giving u power when needed and optimising fuel other wise....but trust me my friend....its not a joke converting to IS...have a complete halfcut before u start...KEY included (IF EWS...the chance of finding one without EWS = GOOD LUCK)
trying to find m42 from e30 chassis ie finding needle in a haystack.
in short, almost all of the m42/44 halfcuts are from the e36....
VERY Messy to put into an e30.
anyway dont take this the wrong way, in no way this is to deject u from getting the m42/44...but i dun think anyone in sabah is qualified to do such a conversion...they only love their toyotas.....in the event u see a bmw, 80% chance toyota 1g/1jz or nissan sr20
M50 on an e30, think again bro....u will be understeering into every corner...first and foremost, driving a car is NEVER about going straight...
the ability to take corners is what separate the men from the boys.
the problem with the e30 is, because of its trailing arm, the tendency to oversteer is high. thus the driver has to focus on getting the rear controlled.....with the m50 u have double work...with a heavier engine, u will be nose diving into every corner, struggling with the understeer then worrying about the oversteer....in short, u will be having a tough farking time controlling the beast. this will eventually lead to your chassis tearing due to the inevitable stress due to metal fatigue and stress overload on the front end.
another thing is...e30 brakes just sucks...u can try the e32 masterpump...but its only a marginal improvement.
the final decision is urs....this is just my humble opinion.
ps : i have no beef against the m42/44 boys

Power to weight ratio.thats the important for me.Its not how fast u can drive in the straight line but its how fast u can take the corner.Thats why i love my E30
