Good morning gentlemens and ladies! I'm planning to upgrade(or downgrade) my ageing l-jet m20b20 for either m42 or m50(non vanos, shoot me). Any workshop that you guys want to recommend(card accepted? budget?). Also pro and cons of these engines or other engines based on your experience. Let the discussion begins Smile

if your bugdet is big the go m50,if samll m42,m50 very powerful ,a bit nose heavy,but u dont autocross do you?m42 is a very lively engine,may not be the power source u need but still fun....

i don't autocross but touge once a while, what sort of budget for m42? 5k?

plus install i think somewhere there...some adjustments to the headers,to clear the steering coupling,,if u have an m40 even easier coz plug n play the gbox...n starter

just find m20b25 engine lantai then using back your l-jet wiring...just test drive one guy in jb done this...cost below 2.5k....huhu...

m50 is timing chain... m20 still using timing belt.24v & 12v.

m52 is kinda wet dream for my car lol. wonder if anyone knows any competent workshop that offer this monster conversion. time to rob another bank.

i've been toying with this idea of M30B35.... for quite some time jugak.. i'm still sourcing for the right gb and ratio though....maybe if time & money permit plus no luck in my S42b20.. then i would proceed with the puppy..... dunno laa dare not to say anything yet.....i believe some have successfully converted this puppy into their e30... wud be great if the experience cud be shared

Been running aroung klang valley yesterday and found this m42, lots of em actually. Is this on DISA intake manifold? Will i encounter EWS nightmare(xsajado, how did you cure yours?)?

by the ecu number yes it is the EWS nightmare, engine number 184s1,no remedy unless u have the ecu,key,key transponder radar,black box,silver box with yellow plastic top...all work hand in hand...ask BMW mech mr Ah wai....he tagged my harness and i put it back together in sarawak..what a nightmare.took six months to install, 3 mnths to swap,3 months to start,coz nobody knew how to wire it..until i brought the harness to Ah wai.

wonder if they have just the head for sale,so i can port it,grind the cams,..dont think they have the e30 m42 intake manifold for sale do they??

then no choice but to go megasquirt way for ecu (7200 rpm?). halfcut in selayang selling engine only for 1.2k Smile

oil pan need to use m40 kan? can i use back my m20b20 getrag 240? how about engine mountings? radiator? fan? Shocked

jeembo - i prefer manual - i got 1 m30b35..without the gb.. thinking of pairing it with the m50 manual gb... is it possible?... or better to go for the original m30 gb?....

xsjado - even if the m30 idea to be materialized... heheh i dun think i wud to dismantle the m42...heheh... but no worries.. ideas still can be shared.. heheheh...rugi le bro. kalau nak bukak2.. sayang pulak.. heheh..

i have a base map for m20b20 somewhere in my hard drives, m42 don't have yet, maybe can curi from your car hehehe. nightmare ke? i'm relying on the megasquirt community for tuning and i have my m20b20 for training lol, pray that it won't go kebaboommm.

The time have finally arrived for the transplant. My m20b20 head gasket blown yesterday, can still run but keeps overheating and loosing compression. I know where to get M42 but don't know of any workshop that willing to do the swap. Just need them to plonk in the engine, all wiring and tuning I do myself. Any recommendation guys. Btw I stay in ampang.

m42 is a good choice lah, you got megasquirt and i guess you dont need ews.
engine without key is more cheaper than with key Smile

half cut around 4.5k with wire harness and ews, takde kunci less 1k kot. have to check around
