hi. i've changed the rubber steering coupling for my ride about 3 months ago.... recently i feel alot of free play in my steering.
so when i check with the mech, he said the coupling is gone and i saw the damn hell free play while the mech turning the steering wheel.
i've bought the part i one of the dealer in sunway.
my question is is there any grade on the coupling? and did i miskatenly bought the low grade/quality coupling.?
is there any aftermarket or performance part for it?
how do keep it last long?
FYI i didnt managed to get the teflon like bush and fixed without it.

It could be other things contributing to steering free play, not just that.
#5: Re: e30 steering rubber coupling Author: datsunnismo, Posted: Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:05 am ---- he turns the steering wheel and ask me to watch the rubber coupling. really can notice the free play....

#10: Re: e30 steering rubber coupling Author: highwaystar, Location: Kola LompuerPosted: Wed Oct 07, 2009 3:15 pm ---- Rubber is Rubber, it only works to dampen the movement of your steering/freeplay an also to give you early warning that you gonna loose control your streering. You have to check Steering Rod Coupling. If steering rod coupling dah memang ada free play, the rubber will torn very the fast one.
#11: Re: e30 steering rubber coupling Author: datsunnismo, Posted: Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:27 pm ---- thanks mates.... will change again with the teflon bush.
yes my steerig coupling (T joint) got litbit free play.
did some diy today...
i removed the steering coupling from car and removed the rubber as well.
unfortunately, there's no tear or creak on the rubber coupling as expected.
then fix it back to the coupling set (this time with teflon bush). result, i can still twist it even with my hands. the rubber so soft.
wht is that mean...?
its time to change the rubber. or new rubber also will do the same. ?
confused.
#13: Re: e30 steering rubber coupling Author: kura2, Posted: Fri Oct 09, 2009 4:42 pm ---- bro, how do you remove the coupling? have to remove steering rack?
#14: Re: e30 steering rubber coupling Author: datsunnismo, Posted: Fri Oct 09, 2009 5:31 pm ---- no need. just loose and remove the two bolts at the coupling (bottam and top)
knock the coupling towards the rack... and u can able to remove the bottam end from the streering shaft. than just pull it.
THE END
bro' pls advice me on the rubber coupling. i afraid it will do the same in couple of month... is there any PU coupling which more stiff. if yes means is't dangerous?
#15: Re: e30 steering rubber coupling Author: chriseunos, Posted: Fri Oct 09, 2009 6:36 pm ---- how about eliminate the rubber coupling and use metal spacers instead. no free play EVAAAA
