Dear Frens,
Let's us share some information regarding this flu that seems to be spreading and as of today caused 3 schools to be closed for a week. We would like to inform you of some basic precaution that should be taken to avoid contracting the disease;

Background
H1N1 flu is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease infecting humans caused by a new virus, which is the result of a mutation from pig, bird and human influenza virus genes. It is transmissible between humans unlike the bird or avian flu where the virus do not transmit between humans (So, in avian flu, you would have to be in contact with infected birds to be susceptible to it).

Prevention
Here are some general preventive measures for influenza to prevent infection;

1. Avoid close contact with people who appear unwell and have fever and cough

2. Practice and maintain the highest level of hygiene e.g. wash your hands with soap & water frequently ( to use hand sanitizer )

3. To maintain a good housekeeping at home & workplace

4. Keep healthy as a high immune system is always a good barrier to catching a bug. This means eating nutritious food, have adequate sleep, and keeping physically active

5. Early signs of influenza A(H1N1) are flu-like, including fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. Seek IMMEDIATE medical attention if you or your family members develop any of these symptoms

There is currently NO vaccine for the H1N1 flu. It will take 4 – 6 months for drug manufacturers to come up with a suitable vaccine.

Travel Restrictions
Please limit all non-critical overseas travel especially to infected areas, as reported by the media. Should you need to travel to the infected countries, please get appropriate approval from the highest level of authority in the company.

Mo poblemo =) .. More schools effected as of today. Latest stats as at 29/6;

20 cases at at 8am 29/6 - 16 import cases and 4 local infection. Total case = 144 nationwide.

As of now, the Ministry of Health said that it is still controllable. I guess because there's no death yet. ..

01/07 - 38 new cases as at 8am this morning. 33 import cases and 5 local infection. Total 196 cases nationwide.

Usually i'm not worried with news like this but after asking a few of my colleque they got me worried.....n i think u guys should too.

Here's the real situation at my place. Everyday we got a few new cases of what we call as ILI ( influenze like illness ). Usually with runny nose, cough, sore thoat n fever. Fever as in 38deg n above. Not those 37.5 like we used to. But really high temp upto 40 deg. MC for a week will be given and home quarentine. Only cases with SOB ( shortness of breath ) of difficuty in breathing will be admitted. No more diagnostic test or throat swabs cause each swab will cost the gov RM3K.

Unless u do get intubated in ICU then we'll do the test for u :). We got a few intubated cases in ICU already here and the wards are overflowing. A few of fellow junior Docs are already down with it and are quarentined. The fren who intubated the patient in ICU is also down with it. ITS that contagious.

So friends please be careful, and its time to get those mask out. I'm wearing it everytime i go to work. Please be advise !!

thanks for the update aRRrgghh and bruised, my question, H1N1 can be contagious through air or touch?..

if air, which mask shall we use? lots in the market today but which is effective? normal surgical mask can? also if touch, we always keep our hand clean (we do shake hand alot), but how about our clothing?...

as for you guys info, i also scared to go to crowded places shopping beli barang dapur pun takut.. ikan mungkin kena H1N1?

virus H1N1 nie takleh merebak melalui udara....
ia akan mati bile di udara..

jangkitan berlaku...
sekira nye...
tangan kite bersentuhan dgn
mukus or lendir dari bersin n batuk2 pesakit H1N1.....
n kite lap pulak hidung or mulut kite dgn tangan yg terkene lendir tu...

then kite akan di jangkiti H1N1.....

nie info yg di berikan....
betulkan info nie kalu salah....

Just like the common flu it spreads by air. Droplets of water when u cough goes to infect others. Just like the common cold. Thats y the name influenza... flu for short. By touch when a fren wipes his snot n shakes hand with u .... u pun kena arr. The thing is when his snot dries up it can be air born and travels farther.

Bout wat type of mask.... takde garentee it will protect u. Yg common surgical mask lg lar tak effective. Just to protect others from YOUR cough. NOT u from others. But i do use N95 type from 3M hehehe.... got it early. It covers around your nose and chin with a rubber strap

just check the n95 just now... makk oiii, they selling at 8.50 each.... unbelievable further more its disposable. mmmm... nak diy lah

Update as at yesterday: 64 death and 33 in ICU...

I tot N95 is the Nokia phone =P. My lil' son is down since yesterday - fever & flu. Now on medication. So far temp didn't hit 38C. Not working la nih for 2 days oredi. Take care of urself my fellow brothers .. especially u bruised =)

**update**

The MOH (ministry of health) has appointed 15 core teams around M'sia to educate, n treat suspected H1N1 pts. Comprises of senior medical consultants and other support staffs. Its noted that patients treated with Respiratory/ infectious dz consultants have better prognosis that general specialists. Also remided doctors to wear surgical mask when attending patients eventhough its not ILI pts.

The WHO projected a second wave of infections will come coming October. Thus MOH has suspended all our leaves untill further notice. In M'sia maybe earlier becs of Raya exodus etc. Also the emergence of mutations in the H1N1 virus also can be of the cause. Resistance strains to certain antiviral drugs also have been found but till date no transmission of this resistance virus yet recorded.
