hi sifus out there...

wanna know if what happen to my ride was normal...

i was driving my ride & caught up with traffic congestion, so the temperature gauge shows this....(it happened too if i park my car idle with AC on) :

when the car started to roll, then the meter will stay exactly in the middle but will fall down under the middle mark during the nite (cooler at nite?)

hope someone can share an idea here? Abnomal?

check ur coolant lvl & the color of the coolant whether its murky or coolantcolored.

sounds like the thermostat needs changing .

happened to me b4.
flushed the coolant all out , replace new thermostat & new toyotacoolant.

dont quote me on this Very Happy

tq...the coolant is brilliant green with crystal clear view....???

anyway, the thermostat will cause engine to over heat rite?

dono leh...inherited from previous owner....but i suppose the coolant is of right type la coz it was serviced by Ingress Auto at Mutiara Damansara...

i could be wrong on this also ,
a properly workign termostat allow coolant to flow thru the engine when the engine is at operating temperature . if the termostat is faulty , the engine would not allowed to be cool as it still thinks that the engine temp is cold or below warm-ed up temp . Once the engine reaches its operating temperature , the thermostat opens. By letting the engine warm up as quickly as possible, the thermostat reduces engine wear, deposits and emissions.

mine is changed almost every service, that's what i heard should be done regulary .

hope this helps.
btw try toyota coolant , red wine in color , its quite good. rm20 per bottle 1litre.

from my experience..
what i did;

flush the cooling system
change the fan clutch

now, tak lebih separuh pun even with ac on masa jam
mind you that i only pour in tap water

Mine will never reached half. The max is the 2nd level. The thermostat maybe is the culprit. Better check bro. U wont want ur NEW ride overheated rite?

bro, change to a lower temp thermostat and then flush the radiator with 2 bottles of toyota coolant. kao tim

TQ BROS for the valuable advises, will try to sort it out first by changing the thermostat....

last nite, traffic jam downtown has caused the temperatyre to rise passed the middle mark, i guess i m pretty bz with preventive maintainence this weekend....AFM, ICV, Thermostat....etc etc....

i just experianced same problem lately..drive for 20-30 mnutes(day/night) then the temperature goes crazy, near redline.
but it happen when the car stop(idle).when the car moves its normal again(at middle n below)..
last night i noticed something new, when the meter goes get almost red,i rev the engine (1500-2000RPM) then the temp meter goes back to middle n below..

i just service my radiotor, hoses, new coolant n all last 2months..any ideas?
thank u so much in advance..

hmmm...bro iCe666, i think your prob is more of the accuracy of the temperature gauge at your meter cluster (i guess la....)

bro tombstone, i hv sent my car to puchong specialist center (as recommended by Chris coz itz near my hse), i dropped the car there for 3 days before went off to outstation for a business trip up north....here's the mech findings:

1. nothing wrong with my ICV and APM
2. all he did was adjusting my AC idling and changed a vacum hose due to leakage

together with these, he solved my idling kacau problem...however, i still not too satisfy as the RPM will somewhat high sometime till reaching 1000rpm at idle with AC on....will continue to monitor.....

as for the temperature issue, the mech has different opinion in contrary to our sifus here....he said itz nothing wrong with my radiator, coolant or thermostat leh.

The mech said our e30 design origins frm Europe spec, so the weather there is rather cooler than Tropical countries, so the radiator fan is smaller and itz not sufficient and efficient to fan off the heat in our country. Therefore, his solution is to modify and fit in a bigger fan! However, i m still hunting (or rather he is searching for me) for the BIG FAN to solve my temperature issue...mean time i hang on to the small fan and try avoid driving congested road....

having said that, he refused to change the thermostat for me but only recommend to flush the radiator and change the coolant....

any sifus here has any comments? appreciate that....

thanks nawty boy,

ok chris, i wanna go to this specialist of urs in puchong...

name of shop bro? location exactly where?

i wanna sort this idling prob which started recently after not using the car for more than 2 weeks... Sad

Bro Nawty, your idling kacau problem i think its due to the vacuum hose leakage, dont worry too much about the rpm during idle. My rpm is also more or less 950-1000rpm when aircon is operating, when i turn off the aircon, its around 800-900rpm.

Regarding your fan issue, i suggest you ask the mech to wire up a direct switch for the fan so that if you are caught in the traffic, just flick on the switch and you get highspeed. E30 fans in my opinion are not good enough (due to old age mostly), i'm using an E34 fan if im not mistaken, if you seriously want a highspeed fan, get a Mercedes benz W124 fan, the only downside is the noise, but i wouldnt be bothered bout the noise as long as the temperature is below half.

For the coolant, i only use Toyota coolant (red and black bottle), i poured in 2 bottles and it has served me well. I've also changed the thermostat to a lower temperature one (cannot remember the degrees).

bro chris! thatz a very informative advise! i'll get another mech to source my fan (probably look for e34 fan like yours, i reckon itz bigger & speedier?) and fix it with a direct switch....

how much would the fan normally cost ah? ah poh said itz not ez to get the bigger fan nowadays...gotta 'GPS' it around till found, izit trus ah?

bro nawtyboy, the e34 one if im not mistaken, its stronger and quieter.

Bro tombstone, really cannot deny the fact that ah poh is wire king XD

I think I have 'luckily' solved my temperature issue for now...

Yesterday I went to Melaka for a biz day trip early in the morning. As I drove frm USJ passed Seremban, the temperature was ok stationed at half way mark (needle pointed middle)....

However, when I approaching Pedas/Linggi with high speed 140km/h and above, I noticed my temperature gauge started to shot up to 3/4 mark! Shocked So I have to stopped by the R&R to cool down the car a bit...called ah Poh & he said suspected radiator clogged or the head gasket is leaked! Shocked

so after half an hour of cool down, i drove slow slow to maintain low speed at low rpm til I reached Alor Gajah (the temperature won't shot up if i drive in town with low speed 60-80 km/h... Crying or Very sad

so sent it to a nearby workshop recommended by biz client, the mech dismantled my radiator, sent for 'cuci tangki', changed my coolant and radiator gasket.....Huola! Very cool engine and all the way smooth from Melaka back to USJ! Razz

My temperature now is only 1/4 mark or sometime slightly lower than 1/2 mark.... Very Happy

BEFORE :

AFTER :

No need to change the fan & thermostat at the moment i guess????..... Surprised Surprised

props to our great wire GOD , ah poh ! Very Happy
been sending my car there since day1 , ..
highly recommend him if for wiring purposes . even help me wire the e46 maplight into my e30 Smile he's also the guy who wired 1 touch window to my car ..difficult long process but he did it.

next , retrofitting e36 coupe window switches to replace the old e30 window switches. like this ...

friendly guy ! make sure buy him teh ais when u bring ur car ..he no drink kopi . highly recommended .

OH i c...juz like those modern type car power window...tks 4 clarify... Smile

hmmm...shall consider that....but need to 1st think of a way to 'smoothen' the power window sliding coz my power windows now like Pak Cik struggling naik bukit, choking & asyik mati engine, Laughing kena press up & down to get it slides....even i applied silicon spray onto the celah-celah pun tak boleh solve masalah nie... Embarassed

mine also slow slow up n down .. was told b4 to change to m40/later model e30 window mechanism , said to be better/smoother than early m20 ones.

was told by ah poh himself.
but havent got time to go round finding those parts.
