Dear Frens,
My ride recently having a not so smooth accelaration. Upon check-up, the mech said my AFM sudah not so good. I've checked with other mechanics too. Same result. It will happened when the engine is hot. Rama-rama di dalam sudah 'expire', he said.

Any suggestions or alternative for this? Some suggestions by the mech:

1. Get a recond AFM @ chop shop about > RM400 (1 week guarantee only woh)

2. Repair - Not so sure the results

3. Buy NEW. Will cost a BOMB!

Any suggestion from Malatians?

i think no 1 is worth trying..during the 1 week duration,rembat the car..if the afm still ok,ok kot?hehe.if rosak then u can tukar.just my opinion

M40 afm? last time our friend dol traffic face the same problem bro.... diagnose as afm faulty but at the end is one bloody sensor...call him to clarify.. i pung dah lupa dah..

i will check around for those who got spare afm. have you try mr racun?

wahhh ada org pakai m40...lega aku....airflow meter kan boleh repair according to a website tapi aku dah lupa...kat dlm afm tu kan spring n resistor je...ada satu lagi sensor tak ingat...resistor boleh cuci pakai eraser ke..pas tu wiper arm tu boleh check contact dengan membengkokkan wiper arm tuh...skali dengan tambah wire utk contact yg lebih hebat...also got gigi in there u can adjust for leaner fuel ratio...jangan try tampa wideband o2 sensor la...my shot term memory loss ni je yang ingat...soweee.ahha cuci skali kat dlm intake tract tu tapi jgn kena sensor yg sensitif mcm perasaan perempuan..yes means no no means yes...no means no ,,,yes means yes...pi buat kajian sendiri dgn specimen sendiri...results may vary with specimen..ehehhe

Arrr... pi tukar baru solve all the headace I change mine in 2004 at RM1450 kalau tak silap and because of this problem I had spend tons of money with all the machanics advice change this and that. No one say the right thing all my electrical wirings change new even coil plug cables semua lah just check how much I did. most trail and error I jadi scapegoat and ni lah trying to safe money... my problem starts may be different from yours, I say if on the highway tengah tekan say I am about to tekan the car refuse to go especially bila nak overtake so much so I will be on the left lane to be safe let go even cuntcils ahead of me.

Actually if you are good at it it can be service and was done by some guys but careful sensitive items inside, I came to know after change new and left my old unit at the workshop its gone. Now I am ok till today.

is 'BMW FI: AEA' still in print? i'm pretty sure it isn't; mine is a spiral bound book from Metric Mechanic and covers only K and L Jetronic.

the AFM recal is pretty straightforward; you add tension to the spring to lean out the mixture, release the spring to richen. spring tension cal works across entire rev range, CO scew adjust affects only the idle mixture. Back it out to lean, screw it in to richen.

Hints:

0. get spark system in order before doing

anything on the fuel system.

1. paint a dot on the spring wheel and

a corresponding dot on the AFM body; this is helpful if the spring spins wildly during adjustment.
2. ajust richness/leaness at 2500-3K RPMs

by pressing the flapper which moves the pointer on the wiper track; monitor the O2 sensor to see how much adjustment you need and change spring tension accordingly. one tooth at a time is best.

on my L-jet cars, i do this with 02 sensor open loop; i have no idea how a Motronic car responds to open loop O2 operation.

'BMW FI: AEA' recommends finding
this sweet spot by ear.

3. i thought the early Motronic cars had

a dip switch in the control unit
for minor adjustments to the richness and spark advance; i've heard this referred to as the 'Fuel Quality Switch'. that's all i know about it

Dude, since my last post in 2006 (that long!) I've serviced the AFM, not DIY my mech done it. Can last few years. And after that, it happened again. Now using another AFM. Got it in good condition @ RM450. Not sure how long it will last =)
