Guys,
Been quietly reading all the forummers input and my you guys are definitely passionate about E30s... Very Happy Very Happy

I own a 1988 M40 325i four door. I am intend to refresh the suspension set since the previous owner made a rojak set up i.e.

Fr: H&R spring + Boge absorbers on 45mm struts
Rr: Original springs with Bilstein absorbers

I have sourced the 51mm front struts and brand new H&R springs...

I am confused on the which absorbers to go with...Can the sifus assist me here?

Secondly is it better to use thicker spring pad or use a thinner one...How low does H&R spring go?

Thanks in advance for the advise provided.

Cheers!

If you are using lowered H&R springs, the best to match with it would be shorter sports absorbers. Yellow Bilsteins are the typical choice, about RM2.3k for a full set. You can get by with normal length black Bilsteins (OEM replacements) like me, but the ride will be abit bouncy as the OEM type absorbers can't cope with the higher spring rate of H&Rs.

For spring pad, all I know is you can remove it to go even lower, or add more if you wanna make the front or rear higher. H&R sports are not very low, mine still have about 2.5 finger front fender gap and 1.5 finger rear gap, with 205/45/16 tires.

Very Happy

Btw, is your ride M40 318i or M20 325i. Laughing

Thanks sir Evil,

Mine is a 1988 M40 body with M20B25 engine...Originally imported from UK in 1992...Previously owned by a good buddy of mine...snatched it away from him when he wanted to overhaulin it...

Heard B6 Bilsteins are pretty hard on H&R... B4 would be okie... Confusion

How about Boge turbo/Sachs? Any comments

chris:

1) I remember you removed your spring pads. That's easily 10-15mm difference.
2) Your tires are 195/55/15 I believe which have a total diameter 5mm larger than my 205/45/16. That's another 2.5mm diff. Razz

Laughing Very Happy

evilnickwong, correct on the 2nd one though but i still retain my spring pads. xD

I read somewhere saying that without spring pads, the springs will move around and causing friction between the springs and the chassis? This is cause rust. THis is what i read la.

Ooo then your springs must be a diff model Laughing

Yeah, I read that too. Without spring pads, it will be metal-to-metal contact which will wear off the springs coating and it will rust.
Also, there might be squeaking/clicking noise from the metal contact.

slightly off topic from the original topic...sorry for that.

I've done some digging. reviews are mixed. some mirror what nick and chris are saying. others are claiming no issue at all. my conclusion, depends where you live and the climate. for us, where it rains a lot. prolly not the best idea.

if im not mistaken, there are 2 types of spring pads, if u want to be lower, get the thinner ones. xD
